Letter from a GYS Sponsor
“A few years ago as I reflected on the years spent raising our children, I concluded that of all the things we were able to give our children one of the most significant and lasting was the gift of music. We were fortunate to have been able to afford music lessons for our girls but realize that this is not the case for all parents and I am saddened by the fact that our public school system does not provide much in this area of arts education – particularly for elementary school children. Wouldn’t it be nice, I thought, to offer this opportunity to a child whose family is not able to do so. What to do …. sponsor music lessons? This could mean providing an instrument … probably quite expensive … and which instrument to choose? I decided that a wonderful solution would be to sponsor a child in the Guelph Youth Singers. Here is an opportunity to learn all the basics of music using the most natural instrument of all … the human voice. Here also is the opportunity to form lasting friendships, to learn discipline, co-operation, self-confidence and the sheer joy of making music. Guelph is fortunate to have a world class children’s choir organization right here in town and I would encourage anyone looking for a means to help provide music in a child’s life to consider a sponsorship of a GYS member. The enjoyment I get from hearing these young people sing and watching their faces as they share music with each other and with their audience assures me that this is a lasting and precious gift.” -Ellen (Former GYS Parent).
