SATB is the advanced mixed voice choir, welcoming in our most experienced trebles, and our young men with changed or changing voices. Repertoire spans many genres including folk, classical, vocal jazz, contemporary a cappella, and so much more (see Pentatonix and Nor’Easters). This accelerated group has won national recognition including First Place at the National Finals of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals, and in performances with the Guelph Symphony and a variety of performing opportunities. Musical skills including strong sight-reading and independence of parts is a mandatory expectation for this senior group. Singers will have optional solo opportunities within the arrangements being studied. The art of a cappella singing and small ensemble performance makes this advanced group a perfect fit for motivated singing teenagers.
2020-2021 Season
SATB’s focus will be performance-based, working towards three virtual choir projects to be included in the module-ending presentation. Working at an accelerated level, the group will meet artists from the world of professional choral and solo singing, and be joined by guest workshop leaders including Juno Award Nominee, jazz vocalist, Heather Bambrick. Listening sessions, vocal improv, and vocal percussion will highlight our ‘Sing With the Pros’ series. SATB will debut an original piece, written for GYS by Toronto musician, Michael Smith, specifically for online presentation. It’s a really exciting gift to these young singers! The majority of rehearsals will take place as a full group, but break-out sessions will happen on occasion for 10-15 minutes, led by auditioned Section Leads. Private coaching throughout the term is available for those interested.
